about

This is a recording of a public conversation between Marlanda Dekine and Scott Neely of Speaking Down Barriers and Krista Hughes of The Muller Center at Newberry College.

In order to understand one another, we must truly listen. In an age of extreme political polarization, has this "civic art" been lost?

Why do we resist it, why it is vital to thriving communities, and how can we cultivate it?

lyrics

Excerpts from this conversation:

"...practice because I do think it is very much like a muscle. There's a maturity that it requires and I think there's an accountability that it requires...I think if we are intentional about wanting to live together in a peaceful way, and I don't mean peace in the sense of just keep everything calm, I mean true peace and true harmony then we have to be committed to listening to one another. That will not happen without listening. It just won't. We'll just continue as we are or worse." -Marlanda Dekine

"Power overwhelms us and it gets in the way of doing this well and that’s why people who hold power have to acknowledge it and either step out of it enough to be vulnerable or share it enough for someone else to have the space to speak and that’s dangerous ground. It’s not easy, but it changes things when it happens." -Scott Neely
